A bit about me: My name’s Amy and I’m part of the team at Step Up Tutoring. I’m an upper sixth student who after getting a 9 at GCSE in both Maths and Biology, went on to study both at A-level. Since I have done work experience at multiple schools and support at a local youth group, tutoring offers an excellent opportunity to help others thrive.
What are my sessions like:Â I offer both online and face-to-face sessions, which I make sure are supportive, positive and engaging. By working with the student to pinpoint areas of weakness, we can effectively work together to improve knowledge, skills, and exam techniques so students can see tangible improvements.
My favourite revision method: My favourite revision method is doing practice questions; they immediately highlight gaps in knowledge while simultaneously developing exam techniques. Furthermore, when you look through your answer afterwards using a mark scheme you can constructively improve it, which is an amazing form of active recall.
Next steps: After finishing my A-Levels, I hope to study biology at university, and then go on to get qualified teacher status.
Tutoring mantra: My tutoring mantra is practice makes progress. No one needs to be perfect, because it’s usually the little tweaks and changes that make a massive difference, and can help you do better and feel more confident in your own abilities.
Hobbies: At the moment I am completing my gold Duke of Edinburgh award, so spend a good chunk of my time working on my skills, volunteering, and playing sports. I love playing netball with my team- I’ve played for years and have developed strong friendships through the sport. I also do a lot of walking in the Peak District, as I love being outside and it fuels my interest in ecology.
